Hendrick BMW Northlake, located conveniently at 10720 Northlake Auto Plaza Blvd. Charlotte, NC would like to unofficially introduce you to a man by the name of Alex Zanardi. Maybe you've previously heard of him. He snagged two CART championship titles in North America, back in the late '90s. He also met great, and might we add sustained, success competing in Formula One.
Then tragedy struck. Over a decade ago, Zanardi lost both of his legs in a near-fatal crash. Demonstrating, impressive amounts of not only will power but courage, he returned to the track just two years following the amputation to compete in the FIA World Touring Car Championship for BMW Team Italy-Spain.
Zanardi played a critical role on the BMW team for six years. After leaving in 2009, he decided to take up handbiking. Two years after that, we earned a senior international handbiking medal, and silver at the UCI World Road Para-Cycling Championships.
As Zanardi continues down the path of handbiking in 2012, BMW has decided to produce a video offering, inspiring insight into this new chapter. The plot is all about thriving - no matter what.
In talking about what happened to him some two decades ago, Zanardi says "Sometime you get a lucky day. Some days, you get a bad one like it happened to me…and you fall down a lot…It's an opportunity to climb back up again…"1
The aspect Hendrick BMW Northlake enjoys most about the BMW-produced video, is Zanardi's humble nature. He credits the many people who encounter similar adversity in their lives and, like him, overcome it. He explains outright that he's not a Superman.
While Hendrick BMW Northlake would beg to disagree, we also find fascinating what Zanardi credits for his ability to thrive: Curiosity. That, he says, is because, "curiosity leads to finding passionate aspects in everything you do."1 And according to Zanardi, it's passion more than ambition that allows people to thrive.
