BMW recently announced its plan to include LTE Wi-Fi in future models that are equipped with a phone cradle dock in the center console. While Wi-Fi technology has already become integrated by certain automakers, it has never been this fast. With the LTE adapter, all passengers will have the ability to access a Wi-Fi hotspot and surf the internet at LTE speeds. This is possible for all personal electronics like tablets and smartphones.
In order to ensure security with the LTE Wi-Fi, the device requires an eight-digit passcode to connect. This will prevent vehicles that are passing nearby, from trying to connect to the hotspot. The adaptor, which supports Near Field Communications, also allows for passengers to simply hold their electronic devices nearby to pick up the Wi-Fi connection.
Believe it or not, BMW has allowed for even more convenience with the device. To use the hotspot outside the vehicle, the adaptor comes with a built in battery that lasts up to one hour. To charge it back up, it simply has to be plugged into a USB port. The convenience of Wi-Fi can now accompany you on all of your driving adventures, no matter where they end up leading you.
While we would certainly love to see this technology become available in the near future, as of now it is only available in Europe. When it is released, it is predicted it will be found in the BMW 5 Series in models like the BMW 528i sedan.
