In order to earn the prestigious IIHS “Top Safety Pick+” designation, a vehicle must receive a “good” rating (the highest) in all five crashworthiness tests, it also must offer an available front crash prevention system that earns an “advanced” or “superior” rating. In the case of the 2016 BMW X1, it earned a “good” rating in all five crashworthiness tests, benefiting from its new body and structure design. The X1’s available front crash prevention system earned the “advanced” (highest) rating from the IIHS, and the system also includes a Forward Collision Warning aspect that is up to the National Highways Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) criteria as well.
