With more and more German performance models adding on all-wheel drive, BMW found itself in danger of lagging behind. But they refused to compromise. So in developing the sixth generation 2018 M5, they didn’t just add an M-tuned xDrive AWD system, but made darn sure it could drive in RWD in a pinch.
On paper, the new M5 looks ready to outgun practically every other competitor, and will most definitely please its longtime fans. The AWD system is the default, yes, but less front wheel involvement can be had in 4WD Sport mode, and none at all in 2WD mode (Dynamic Stability Control goes off, too). With your chosen power delivery method, you can do anything you’d like with the 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque on tap. Hit sixty in 3.2 seconds? Easy. Drift with confidence? All in a day’s work. You can even opt for additional M Division steering, suspension, and brakes for better feel and performance overall.
