What's New for the Fifth-Generation BMW X5?

A Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) is BMW's term for a vehicle that combines SUV space and capability with sedan-like driving dynamics, a category the X5 created in 1999 and has defined ever since. The 2027 model carries that idea into BMW's new Neue Klasse design era, with a taller, more upright front end, the brand's new vertically aligned kidney grille with Iconic Glow lighting, and a cabin built around BMW Panoramic iDrive and a 17.9-inch curved Central Display.

Every 2027 X5 and iX5 is assembled at BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, the largest single BMW factory in the world and the only plant that's ever built an X5. The iX5 is the first fully electric vehicle to come out of that plant, a milestone happening about 75 miles from Charlotte instead of an ocean away.

The 2027 BMW X5 40 and 40 xDrive: The Familiar SAV, Sharpened

The 2027 BMW X5 40 and X5 40 xDrive keep the formula Charlotte drivers already know, built around a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six now producing 394 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque, a 19-horsepower gain over the outgoing model. A 48V mild hybrid system adds up to 17 additional horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque for quicker response off the line.

The rear-wheel-drive X5 40 starts at $69,800 MSRP and reaches 60 mph in an estimated 5.1 seconds, while the all-wheel-drive 40 xDrive starts at $72,100 MSRP and does it in 4.8 seconds with a one-foot rollout. The X5 40 launches first, in October 2026, with the 40 xDrive following in early 2027.

The 2027 BMW X5 50e xDrive: Plug-In Power for Daily Electric Driving

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) pairs a gas engine with a rechargeable battery-powered motor, letting drivers charge at home and run on electricity for daily trips while keeping the gas engine ready for longer drives. The 2027 BMW X5 50e xDrive combines a 308-horsepower inline-six with a 194-horsepower electric motor for 483 combined horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Its 26.5-kWh battery delivers an estimated 44 miles of electric-only range, enough to cover most Charlotte commutes without burning a drop of gas, and the X5 50e can run on electricity alone at speeds up to 87 mph.

Starting MSRP is $77,500, with 0-to-60 arriving in an estimated 4.6 seconds. Like the iX5, the X5 50e xDrive will be available to view in our new BMW electric inventory once it lands.

The 2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive: BMW's First All-Electric X5

The 2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive is the first fully electric version of the X5 BMW has ever built, and it addresses the two biggest hesitations electric SUV shoppers have: range and charging speed. Two electric motors produce a combined 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque, with an estimated range of up to 435 miles on a full charge. DC fast charging at up to 460 kW brings the battery from 10 to 80 percent in about 22 minutes, and the iX5 can add an estimated 170 miles of range in just 10 minutes at a compatible station.

It comes standard with a NACS charging port and full bidirectional charging, meaning the iX5 can power a home during an outage or charge another vehicle in a pinch.
