Hendrick BMW Northlake is glad to see that BMW is not only evolving its automotive products but the means by which those products are made as well. BMW installed a new age-friendly assembly line that included adjustable work benches, wooden floors, and other alterations. They then brought in older workers and put them to the test against younger ones.
Luxury brands like BMW rely more on manual skill than other high-volume manufactures. With this all in mind, BMW began to worry upon realizing that their most talented workers would be hitting their golden years in just a matter of time. BMW projected that by the year 2017, the average age of their workers would jump from 41 to 46.
Instead of recruiting younger employees and releasing the older ones, the automaker decided to take action and install the new assembly line. When it was tested, not only did those more advanced in age keep up with sprightly young ones, they exceeded them in terms of quality work.
BMW has now implemented over a dozen assembly-line alterations at its plant in Dingolfing, Germany. These range from bigger lettering on instruction screens to quicker rotation cycles to keep minds fresh and sharp.
