When it comes to concept models, Bavarian automaker BMW goes all out. At this year's OutDoor Friedrichshafen trade fair in Germany, it introduced a new wagon that is quite eye-catching. Called the BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor, this model is designed especially for drivers who plan to engage in adventurous outdoor activities.
Keeping the eco-friendly driver in mind, the Concept Active Tourer Outdoor sports a plug-in hybrid drive system. It consists of a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine coupled with an electric motor and battery pack. This setup allows the vehicle to generate 190 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. It can also reach a speed of 62 miles per hour in less than eight seconds and achieve a top speed of 124 miles per hour. Not too shabby for a hybrid model.
The most impressive feature however, is how its interior is specially designed to accommodate equipment for outdoorsy adventures. Behind the rear seats, two build-in retractable carriers can easily stow two bikes when the seat and front wheel are removed. To protect the car's interior, the vehicle is also outfitted in a tough surface treatment and studded plastic flooring.
In terms of technology, the Concept Active Tourer features an 8-inch black panel display with a ConnectedDrive system. It can be used for navigation, and even includes the special product BMW helped to design called the "Heart of the Alps," a route guide that will help you to plot out future adventures.
Here at Hendrick BMW Northlake, we'd certainly love to see this model make its way into production in the United States someday.
