Excitement is in the air as the unveiling of the BMW i3 model is just around the corner. However, the questions surrounding the vehicle's ability to travel longer distances, have a lot of drivers hesitant about being outside the range of a charging station. Range anxiety is generated from the fear that they won't be able to freely enjoy longer excursions with the all-electric vehicle. In order to provide a cure, BMW has been tossing around a few ideas.
For the last few years, BMW has been closely observing EV driving patterns to properly assist its customers. Over 1,000 pilot drivers throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia have driven about 12.5 million miles since 2008. Looking for particular patterns based on lifestyle, the research determined the daily commute for regular drivers and EV drivers both averaged about 25 miles each day. Taking this into consideration, BMW developed the i3 model to achieve a driving range of about 80 to 100 miles. This allows for easy commutes and the potential to take longer trips as well. Add in the fact that 90 percent of vehicle charging occurs at home or the workplace, and it seems that BMW is already helping to lessen the range anxiety issue.
One of the circulating rumors is that BMW will develop a program in which EV drivers can loan out a reliable new BMW vehicle so they will be able to embark on longer driving adventures. Although this does sound like a desirable option, the automaker has not confirmed anything definite. We will keep you updated on these developments right here on our Hendrick BMW Northlake blog.
